As Chandler Bing,Matthew Perrybrought the dry humor toFriends,often at his character’s own expense. The beleaguered Bing went through jobs and relationships, though found a happy ending when the series wound down alongside wife Monica Geller (Courteney Cox) and their twin babies.
In his 2022 memoir,Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,Perry wrote about how his own unique manner of speech affected his work as Chandler.
“I read the words in an unexpected fashion, hitting emphases that no one else had hit," he wrote. “I was back in Ottawa with my childhood friends the Murrays; I got laughs where no one else had.”
“It was as if someone had followed me around for a year, stealing my jokes, copying my mannerisms, photocopying my world-weary yet witty view of life,” he continued of reading theFriendsscript. “It wasn’t that I thought I could play ‘Chandler’; I was Chandler.”
Whatever it was, Chandler resonated with fan, and had many memorable moments throughoutFriends'10-season run from 1994 to 2004.
