How did you go from doing No Heroics , which was more of a superhero spoof , to co - writing a straight - up superhero motion picture ?
Well , Kevin Feige ( President of Marvel ) and I have n’t really distinguish this storey in public . But at dinner party the other dark Kevin tell me that the time ’s right , because there ’s all this dumb material out there about how they just reach their crown gem franchise to some hombre who was on contract , and that ’s patently bollocks . So , for those who like …
I ’d made my superhero idiot box show No Heroics , and that led to writing runaway for Marvel — but in September 2010 , that project start up to lose impulse , due to the impendent mammoth world - building of Avengers . And at the same time , I had my first kid . I was up at 4 am every morning , feeding the baby and go out of my judgment with lack of eternal sleep . I started to view DVD – let in the first Iron Man , which I consider the gold standard of modern superhero movies , and Iron Man 2 , which I do not .
And basically , I started thinking of what I ’d do with a third movie . And writing it down . And at some compass point , after four weeks , I had a 30 - page document . I have no idea how . That pitch has subsequently become known at Marvel as “ the Jerry Maguire text file ” .
I sent it to my Runaways manufacturer , and she reacted by a ) telling me I ’d gone excited and b ) enounce that lawfully , she belike could n’t even accept it . I convinced her to read it , though , and she reluctantly pass it up the chain to Stephen Broussard , the IM3 producer , and Kevin Feige himself . And …
Their chemical reaction was a deafening silence . In fact , in Stephen ’s case , when I encounter him in a corridor later that year , there was a flavour of unfeigned fear in his eyes that advise he thought I was a sociopath . Quite understandably . So I forgot about the document , and have on with my biography .
Three months later on , I come a call from Kevin ’s role saying he was in London register the orchestra for Thor and had some free time — would I take a general meeting ? And so , when it came to OUR Iron Man movie , Shane and I tried to answer the question of this growing universe : how does a real guy , however talented , react to this new world of deity and monsters ? And that ’s an idea very much at the heart of No Heroics too .
What did you study from working on the Runaways screenplay about accommodate comics for the large sieve ?
I learnt that the direction I prefer to do it involves judge to stay on faithful to the sprightliness of a book without slavishly following its detail . What makes a good comic Christian Bible does n’t of necessity make for a safe movie ( and that ’s the same of ALL adaptation , I ’d reason ) .

What made you cat decide to include such a heavy voiceover ? ( And why have it be a soliloquy to Bruce Banner ? ) The first two Iron Man motion picture did n’t have a voiceover , that I can remember , and it seems like Tony ’s voiceover does a quite a little of heavy lifting in setting up a lot of clobber speedily — what was the thinking behind that ?
You know what ? The voiceover was one of the very first things Shane and I decide we want to do . There ’s a good sense of internal journeying in this film that the others did n’t have , what with Tony ’s PTSD and terror onrush , and so we wanted him to “ own ” the picture show from the inner out ( and that inside / outside motif also applies to the suits themselves ) .
There actually used to be scads more voiceover in there . And then RDJ , clearly , had a ton MORE estimate . We wrote pageboy and pages . But at long last , less stop up being more .
Did you guy rope ever consider playing the Mandarin straight ? I know that Shane Black was nervous about the theatrical role ’s Fu - Manchu roots early on . Were there any hand drafts where the Mandarin really was the main scoundrel , or a serious threat ? What made you guys to decide to have that plait with the Mandarin ?
You might have noticed , but Shane ’s not excessively disturbed about political correctness in any form , so that really was n’t the driving motivation . It was all about what we thought was most interesting . We really dally with a draw of mind and rendering , and I research every iteration from the comic strip — not just the ones Shane or I already Modern from our respective childhood . But this was frankly the only take on it that we really bang — that felt fresh , and on the themes of the movie . hide behind mask , essentially , which is Tony ’s big problem . I really trust that where possible , the villain plot should mirror or wiretap into the same just clobber that the hero ’s journey is dealing with . This was the one way we found , through months of treatment that accomplished that nonesuch whilst also being entertaining and surprising .
Here ’s the big thing : go into this moving picture , Shane said to me that what he wanted from my ideas were “ bold strokes ” . The Mandarin was probably our wild — and was never going to please everyone . But it ’s an idea I ’m very proud of , and I finger we 100 % made the right choice .
A lot of citizenry have been wonder what ’s up with the Ten Rings organization . It was set up as an ongoing terror in the first moving picture — is it supposed to be something Aldrich Killian make , or something totally disjoined ? Did the Mandarin just take over some iconography from an existing Ten Rings organisation , as part of his use of elevate symbols from elsewhere ?
It definitely exists , both historically and , I mistrust , at the sentence of Iron Man 3 too . Maybe they ’re still , maybe they ’re plotting their own stuff — but they ’re a genuine terrorist terror in the MCU . Now , I opt to keep a piffling ambiguity around the concept of a “ genuine ” Mandarin , but the motion picture does clearly state that it ’s a centuries - old warfare pall that has been used many times before . mayhap it will again . But Killian found it powerful enough to purloin for his creation — and inspiring enough as a concept that it helped shape the Extremis - fire personality he reinvented himself as .
The Mandarin is sort of a imitation of a terrorist , spouting palaver that plays well on television and playing with symbols from dissimilar cultures . Is there mean to be some connote comment on Americans ’ susceptibility to hysteria about terrorist act ? Was there some business organization from the kinsfolk at Marvel about that subject matter being too prominent ?

I have no thought about future plans . However , there was a lot more AIM in original drafts of this movie that we simply did n’t have time to put in the moving-picture show . The pitch by a grouping of “ reimagingeers ” to Rhodey of potential rebrands was there . Also , some actual conniption with the Think Tank and Killian . Then finally , the murder by Brandt of that full group to cover Killian ’s tracks . That setting was pretty brutal and I loved it .
At first I got the impression that Killian is using the Mandarin to take credit for explosions that are actually just have by the Extremis virus going awry . But afterward , we learn that he ’s working with the Vice President of the US , who will take over once Killian has off the President . How does Killian go from just using act of terrorism as a natural covering for his scientific failures to in reality plotting the putsch of the United States ? That ’s kind of a large leap .
Killian is a smart guy , and he ’s effective at think on his feet . He used his think tank to “ thunk up ” the Mandarin and cover his tracks when the Extremis experiment guys bug out function hot in the field . But when the Mandarin creation start to work better than expected , he pull in the artificial “ demon ” might have other uses too in his effort for more force .
One of the thing that delimitate successful people is their ability to take failure and ferment it into succeeder — Killian does this literally It ’s also a fiber evolution , because this is a man with literal power coursing through his body for the first sentence . Why does Tony need to destroy all his rest suits of armor in the end ? Why not just stash them , in lawsuit the Chitauri come back tomorrow ?
I recollect he ’s a man of impetuous ideas — and an old romantic at heart . The suit destruction is symbolic of his committedness to Pepper , and of cleaning the slating to move forward . Is that irresponsible in the nerve of potential foreign intrusion ? Possibly . But is it an effectual , poetic grand gesture to the cleaning lady he screw that suggests that he is free , at least , of the suit of clothes - construction , anxiousness - driven obsession ? I would argue yes .
Plus … I ’m not a look man , but if Tony ’s back in Avengers 2 , I distrust we ’ll see more suits . Call me wild .
I was pretty astonished , watch the whole movie , by how much of a deal Tony is through much of it . The terror approach , the insomnia , and so on . Obviously , he ’s had some intense experiences — but what made you guys decide to take it that far ? Were there drafts where his PTSD and trauma went even further ? Was there stuff that had to be dialed back ? Or were there moment when you decided to push it further than you in the beginning planned ?
That actually evolved from the first day Shane and I were talking about thing , right the way through shooting and the edit . Basically , IM3 is REALLY a 4th moving picture – the end of Tony ’s traditional hero arc is his selfless act at the end of Avengers . And we were ghost with making certain we brought “ reality ” into the movie , particularly after gods and alien . And so his response , like ours , became central to the picture .
This was sort of your first big tentpole picture show . What was the most surprising thing about being involved in that process ? How much of the written material cognitive operation was just being on set and coming up with fresh pages on the go , as people had ideas or thing changed ?
frankly , I do n’t reckon my experience on this moving-picture show is at all indicative of how these things normally work out — from the irregular way I got the job , right the agency down to the fact that I was still there six weeks ago when we cease this thing . And I opine , in many ways , Marvel are their own thing . I ’ve not project anyone as effective at putting together the nuts and bolts of a megahit so far .
Shane and I kicked thing around and wrote treatments for four or five month . Then I practically drop a line something every week — nearly every DAY — for the next two year . I was on solidification , in the edit bay … this tiny core team on the movie , build around RDJ , led by Shane and overseen by Kevin Feige , really did just make this thing from showtime to finish . It was like being on a very grownup indie picture , and I ’ve loved every minute of it . I suspect that ’s partly Stockholm Syndrome — or more fitly , that chemic reaction the human body has that mean it forgets the nuisance of childbirth over time . But there ’s also a part of me , at the end of this , that suspect I wo n’t get to do something as insanely sit - of - your - pants — yet also gigantic and well - loved — anytime presently . Sniff .
