Owens was once a vast lake , but in 1913 , an aquaduct was constructed to feast its waters into the growing City of Los Angeles . As the lake dried up , township like Keeler , which draw revenue from both its mines and its lakeshore emplacement , transform into hot , marshy patches of acres . And Keeler did n’t just lose tourist tax income from the disappearance of the lake . Once Owens vaporize , Keeler was plagued by pervasive dust storm , including one-time mining chemical kick up from the now dry lake bottom .
