In any other dimension , Stan Against Evil , IFC ’s horror comedy about a 50 - something curmudgeon fated to crusade fiend , would be a fresh and pleasurably gory new treat . In one where it must co - subsist alongside the superior Ash Vs Evil Dead , however , it amount off a spot stale in comparison .
That ’s not to say Stan Against Evil suck . Star John C. McGinley — as the titulary Stan , a recently - widow , recently - pull back sheriff of a cursed New England village — has enormous appeal , make his jerky , nonchalantly sexist / racist , hockey - ghost blowhard a guy you actually require to settle for , rather than just perforate in the face . And the set - up is clever enough . In the first episode , which had a Halloween trailer but officially premiere tonight , Stan learns that the only understanding he has n’t yet suffered a terrible demise ( as every sheriff in Willard ’s Mill , NH has since 1693 ) is because his late married woman was a learner of the supernatural , as well as a collector of the spells and weapons postulate to fight off morbid resister . Without her protection , he soon actualize , he ’s fair game — as is the Modern sheriff of Willard ’s Mill , Evie Barret ( Janet Varney ) , who ’s appointed after Stan beats up a Wiccan at his wife ’s funeral .
Crabby Stan and oft - exasperated Evie become a squad out of necessary , with sidekick role filled by Stan ’s ditzy daughter and Evie ’s as ditzy surrogate . Each episode ( we ’ve seen the first six out of eight aggregate , but will keep this trailer pamperer - free ) blink back to a demonically - charged moment in Willard ’s Mill history , before zipping to the present and preface a scenario in which said demon must be vanquished .
Though the types of devil depart , they all have a single finish : to eliminate “ the constable , ” both current and retired . This is made perfectly clear . For some reason , though , the characters decline to be proactive about their predicament . At one point , lie with full well he has a target on his back ( at least until all of the townsfolk ’s 172 demons are defeated ) , and having late squirm a valet de chambre - goat in his own front yard , Stan conclude denial is the right strategy . demurrer , and a lot of beer .
That ’s exactly what Ash did at the end of Ash vs Evil Dead ’s first season , settle he ’d rather party hard in Jacksonville than fight Deadites for the eternal rest of his life . And like Ash , Stan has to be remind again and again why he ca n’t just blow off the beasties and relax . But if Ash does n’t campaign , the whole world might terminate . If Stan does n’t crusade , he ’ll just end up the latest in a foresighted line of drained sheriff .
Another example of how the stakes are uneven between the two shows : Stan has a scene where it cuts away from a murder ; we get word screams , etc . , and then see the victim ’s decapitated head carry away by an animal . Meanwhile , earlier this season Ash have a spectacularly repulsive setting in which Bruce Campbell ’s loath Italian sandwich flailed around a dead room for half the sequence , wrestling a quicken colon . There ’s tons of roue and guts … and one very fast-growing butthole . And the camera is the right way up in the natural process the whole time .
Really , it ’s almost unfair to compare Stan and Ash , since Stan is commence from shekels and Ash is piggyback off decades of rage - movie love . But the true statement is , even without the Evil idle mythology forming its backdrop , Ash would have the edge . It ’s over - the - top in every agency : its humour , its tempo , its act style , its boundary - push , and its key signature bucket of gore . Stan is comical , but it feels like a whisper next to Ash ’s arduous - metal monster mash .
