It ’s preview Nox at Comic - Con , and DC showed the pilot for two of its upcoming young shows : Constantine and The Flash . And they were both good ! Here are our spoiler - free first picture .
The Flash
It ’s a Lighter pointer
The best affair about The Flash ’s pilot program is that it takes advantage of the fact that it ’s living in an already - give world . It ’s basically Arrow , but lighter . Literally light : there ’s a lot more brightness in Central City than in Starling . Which fits Barry , a character much less prostrate to brood than Oliver .
Even though it ’s the line fib for Barry Allen , it feels like an episode of a serial rather than a neat - up pilot film . While it does n’t need you to have it away Arrow , there ’s a comfort with the existence that few pilots have right out the gate . Which is the welfare of having done a back entrance pilot during Arrow , I guess .
“ comfy ” is the good parole for the pilot . If you wish Arrow , you ’ll like The Flash . instead , if you do n’t wish Arrow , this is not for you . I do worry that the pilot , which is good , will lose from the high expectation build by Arrow . fare off that show ’s larger-than-life build , this is just going to seem small-scale .
Some of the Best Mentors / Father Figures Around
Of the supporting mould , Jesse L. Martin and Tom Cavanaugh stand out the most . Neither is playing outside their comforter zone ( Jesse L. Martin is a cop ? Really ? ) , but that ’s not a bad matter . Martin ’s Joe West is as comforting a presence as you ’d recall he is . And Cavanaugh also hits all the right notes as Dr. Harrison Wells . And he has a lot of notes to attain . He ends up being the most complicated character in the pilot . From successful scientist , to recreant scientist , to being Barry ’s encouragement . Plus , there ’s thewhole ending thinghe has to draw off .
World - building
Yes , there are a short ton of comedian references here . And a call - backs to Arrow . It ’s not just viewers who are realize them , the pilot is expressed about bind the two together . include a substantial cameo .

Constantine
The Look
This show knows on the nose what atmospheric state it ’s going for . It play with shadow and light highly well , create a world were the supernatural infiltrate the mundane in a creepy way .

Of course , they could have blow it all on the pilot , but I really hope not . It looked so good that The Flash , which had its pilot screen before and after Constantine suffered in comparison . In particular , the scene where the character reference Liv ( Lucy Griffiths ) “ sees ” the spirits , ghosts , fiend , what - have - you around here do not face at all cheesy . They are genuinely scary .
Matt Ryan Is Constantine
Forallwe’ve heard about thechangesbeing made to the character for the covert , Matt Ryan is unaffected by any of it . He ’s groovy . The very beginning of the pilot burner introduce him in moderately bad shape , and Ryan plays it all : ira , desperation , and the inability to melt from his own knowledge . And he ’s funny . He give birth the personal credit line that are jokes perfectly , without overplaying them at all .
He also makes mistake . That ’s made repeatedly clear throughout the pilot . For all that Ryan ’s Constantine has plans for everything , he very nearly messes it all up because of his guilt feelings .
One of the problems with the pilot was that the rest of the character did n’t feel nigh as lived in as Constantine . Except maybe Jeremy Harris as Ritchie Simpson , whose rant about all the drug he ’s on now is very well deliver . Harris and Ryan , in their one scene together have the good chemistry of any other pairing . Harold Perrineau ’s Manny the angel and Constantine ’s combative human relationship does n’t quite colloidal gel ( although , he is the reason for one the episode ’s not bad gist , even if it dish up small purpose to the plot ) . He ’s imagine to be self-satisfied and superior , but Perrineau ’s not quite play the authority require to make it credible .
Liv
The fiber of Liv is the elephant in the way of the pilot . Lucy Griffithswas allow goand the character is n’t being recast . They ’re adding another female character , Zed , instead . The problem is that the whole pilot roll around bring Liv into Constantine ’s macrocosm and using Liv as the case who receives exposition . She ’s the character who grows in the original : She ’s the objective of supernatural begins , she learns she has new major power , and she ’s the one who keeps Constantine from making a misunderstanding . If you watch the first trailer , there ’s a snippet where Liv says “ I postulate to ascertain these thing and stop them , and I ca n’t do it alone . ” That ’s been replaced with an account of why we ’re not going to be seeing Liv anymore .

Which ultimately makes it hard to get a sense of what the show ’s go to be . We see a few thing from Constantine ’s past that are obviously run to come up again and we listen from Manny that there ’s something coming . But the fender seemed to be a whole installment about recruiting Liv to the cause and setting up a show with her learn new thing and acting as the “ visionary ” of the supernatural . So her leaving was really unsatisfying .
Ultimately , though , Ryan is the tangible attractor here . You just want to drop more fourth dimension catch him after the cowcatcher , and that ’s more than enough to put it on our “ ticker ” list .
