The history of two women who were stranded at ocean for 5 months in shark - overrun waters seemed almost too cinematic to be true . And now some expert are questioning the veracity of some of their claims .
Jennifer Appel , Tasha Fuiava , and their two dogs leave their rest home state of Hawaii on a voyage to Tahitiback on May 3rd . After being ground for what they say was calendar month , the women were spotted last week by a Taiwanese fishing vas roughly 900 miles southeast of Japan and the Navy ’s USS Ashland ship was deploy to save them .
The fair sex were incredibly thankful for being pick up and the US Navy confirmed that their gravy holder was n’t set to sail , but other questions started to arise , such as why they did n’t use an emergency beacon to call for help .

The Associated Press looked into it , and substantiate that the two had an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon ( EPIRB ) aboard butnever turned it on . According to the women , they felt that they were n’t in any immediate danger that would postulate institutionalise out an exigency signal .
“ We need why during this class of time did they not set off the EPIRB . She had stated they never felt like they were truly in hurt , like in a 24 - time of day menses they were going to kick the bucket , ” US Coast Guard representative Tara Molle told the Associated Press .
Another title made by the women was that they experience a 3 - day tempest that reach fart in excessiveness of 60 naut mi per time of day . But the National Weather Service in Honolulu tell that no such storm fall out and NASA weather condition image do n’t show anything like that . Such a storm would be unbelievably rarefied in that part of the human race in May .

And then there ’s the claim of vicious sharks in the region , which Appel suppose were learn their untried to run .
“ They amount by to slap their tails and tell us we ask to move along , ” Appel said on aphone callwith reporter immediately after they were rescued . “ They decided to use our vessel to learn their child how to hunt down . They attacked at night . ”
But experts do n’t believe it .

“ It sounds like something a 4 - yr - old would order you , ” George Burgess , a shark expert at the Florida Museum of Natural History told theNew York Times . “ No . No , no and no and no . There ’s not an iota of truth relative to our knowledge of the shark in any of that . ”
“ The only one that fits that pattern was the star of the movie Jaws , ” he state .
One affair that keep coming up that would chalk up some of these inconsistencies to ignorance rather than spite or a possible hoax is just how fleeceable the women were . Fuiava had never sailed before and Appel copped to her own relative inexperience in difficult sailing conditions in a video made after they were rescue .

When you watch the video of the woman aboard the USS Ashland they seem both solemn and relieved that they were saved . But people who doubt their story will sure as shooting raise their eyebrows about one scuttlebutt made by Appel .
“ I was joke with someone about ten years ago , and they said ‘ What occur when you go out to sea and you get broken ? ’ and I said , ‘ Well , the Navy will come and economise me . ’ No lie , ” Appel said . “ It really happened . ”
