Trying to describe The Pretender to citizenry who ’s never seen it is nearly impossible . The assumption is ridiculous and the construction unbelievable . It ’s a supremely strange show and I literally ca n’t consider it endure four season on NBC .
Here ’s a summary : A man named Jarod ( no last name ) escapes from the Centre ( no descriptive name ) , where he has spent his entire puerility being used for his amazing intellect to … run simulations of things so that … the people paying the Centre … could get the best programme possible … for whatever . He ’s pursued by Miss Parker ( no first name ) , the girl of the gentleman in commission of the Centre ; Sydney ( OH MY GOD WHY DID NO ONE IN THIS SHOW HAVE FULL NAMES ) , the Dr. who had fundamentally evoke Jarod ; and Broots , a reckoner nerd .
The convention of each instalment was fundamentally that Jarod ( Michael T. Weiss ) would show up somewhere in a steel new job — he could literally do anything , that ’s what “ Pretender ” stand for — to clear some form of injustice . He ’d do that , arrange for the bad guy to suffer some sort of ironic bother and arrest , and then leave again , usually just before Miss Parker ( Andrea Parker ) prove up to chase him .
And that part , where Jarod was basically a superhero , was weird enough . When you add in whatever the hell the Centre was , the show ’s mythology gets downright insane . dredge up specific missions of Jarod ’s is hard , but the eldritch cocksucker happen on the Centre end ? slowly .
They have a “ tribunal ” system for question employee about thing hold up wrong . There are dry cleaner , which are like a mystic police , and Sweepers , which are security . Because why not have a braggart unusual corp with an heavy appointment scheme .
Sydney was always doing some variety of weird experiment with similitude . There was a creepy denudate dandy name Raines who had an oxygen tank . Miss Parker had a secret sociopathic counterpart who , I swear to god , fall back a thumb at one percentage point . Actually , everyone had secret relatives running around . Sydney had a secret twin in a coma . Miss Parker had a duad of brother and an uncle . At one point there was a young ringer of Jarod cuckold around . There was a guy rope in the vents who has his own particular mind powers . Oh , and Jarod cartesd around a case full of surveillance footage of his intact childhood .
Plus the name thing which is downright ridiculous . Mr. Parker does n’t ever use his daughter ’s name in orderliness to preserve this conceit . So he call her “ Angel ” rather . Her crony ? Mr. Lyle . Is that his first name , his last name ? NEITHER ! It ’s an alias . At one item , Sydney is introduce as “ Dr. Sydney ” to nullify naming him properly . Are these hoi polloi ’s names the anti - life equation ? What ’s happening ? !
All of that was weird as the pits , but then the show got canceled … and somehow got eldritch . There were two TV moving-picture show made after the show proper ended . Pretender 2001 basically dealt with the cliffhanger left by the time of year four finale and the series ’ cancellation . Island of the Haunted sum up a net ton of backstory to the Parker family and introduced to all his insanity … a prophecy and magic . SURE . I judge .
And yet , somehow , I kind of love this show ? Its former seasons were mostly fun lilliputian adventures . The later seasons went off the deep end in a serious way , and that makes it even more pleasurable somehow . The form was engage and everyone involve seemed to have a blow , which translated to the viewing experience . It ’s so camp and ridiculous and exactly the thing to take in in syndication while doing preparation . Which is how I , and the one other person I ever met who watched it , encounter it .
I ’m still annoyed by the name thing , though .
