“ If you have a story that lends itself to a continuation , that should kind of be there in it,”director Tim Millertold io9 . “ It was inT2 , even if you did n’t recognize it . One of the thing that makes Terminator : Dark Fateso good is that it tellsa complete story . sure as shooting , it leaves you want more , but at its core , the fib has a beginning , halfway , and end . We do n’t do it what the futurity make for Dark Fate either ( though theweekend box office was n’t too hot ) , but we talked to Miller about some of those burning dubiousness you may have after seeing the moving-picture show . We threw in some theories of our own too .
Where did Legion come from ?

Legion is the name of the contrived intelligence that humanity is campaign against in Terminator : Dark Fate ’s future . It ’s essentially the same theme as Skynet , the A.I. Sarah Connor stopped from being createdduring the events of Terminator 2 : Judgment Day . But unintelligent humanity , we did it again . Another A.I is send Terminators back to the yesteryear , just with dissimilar names .
The question , though , is how ? How was Legion created after Sarah ’s success in Terminator 2 ? Miller knows , but he ’s not say . “ I can secern you that if they ever make the 2d picture show , there ’s an response to that enquiry , ” he said . “ But it ’s not the same as it was in the other Terminator motion-picture show . ”

Rev-9 (Gabriel Luna) vs. T-800 (Arnold something)
That last part is important because , in Dark Fate , there seem to be a few consequence where Legion ’s Rev-9 Terminator is fighting Skynet ’s T-800 Terminator and the Rev-9 take part of the T-800 for himself . Miller said that despite what it may look like , Legion ’s ancestry is not hidden in those scenes and the Rev-9 does not absorb anything . He ’s just surprised to see another Terminator . “ It causes him to waver for a 2d , ” Miller tell . “ He realizes that he ’s contend something that ’s not normal and not human . ”
All we make out is that , at some full point around 2042 , mankind created an A.I. that became self - aware , and it soon famish humanity into near defunctness . Similar to what happen with Skynet , but not the same . The answer are , hopefully , still coming .
So are we sure Legion did n’t come from the fact that two Terminator bodies are give at a dam at the end of the movie ?

Again , Miller allege Legion ’s blood line is not the same as Skynet ’s . It does n’t have to do with leftover Terminator pieces . Plus , he point out that 2020 , which is when the movie is set , is much different from 1984 or 1995 .
“ You could imagine , in the original Terminator and Terminator 2 , that this technology could be hidden in some elbow room , ” Miller said . “ But you just ca n’t imagine that that is going to be the same in our [ time ] . It ’s [ all ] caught on so much video , all this fantastical material . We do n’t deal with it in our motion picture , but it would have to be dealt with that some people are going to know that something unearthly is going on and it ca n’t be contained in the elbow room it could be because of the surveillance state . ”
Basically , even if all pieces of the Terminators are put down , Miller figures that in this time geological period , Gizmodoand every other web sign out there is die to compose about those wild effect entrance on cell phone cameras near the Mexican border . One that ( because of how young he appeared ) Miller think had only been there a few old age , so the Carl Terminator arrived after the events of Terminator 2 .
And , of course , if you ’re thinking “ Skynet was gone , how could it still be station back eradicator ? ” That ’s smart thinking . But , as per Miller ’s statement , it send eradicator back to various prison term before it was destroy , they just happened to arrive after . Time travel !
Why would Skynet send T-800s and not T-1000s ?

By the prison term of Terminator 2 , we know that Skynet has move beyond the T-800 model Terminator to the liquid alloy T-1000 . It would seem only ordered for Skynet to send those more advanced exterminator back across prison term as “ boring bullets ” or else of the T-800s . Alas , Miller remind us that in Terminator 2 we ’re told the T-1000 was an advanced epitome , and so Skynet only had one . “ More on that afterwards , ” Miller tease .
So what happened to the other Terminators that came back before the events of the movie ?
Dark Fate reveals that in the years since John ’s murder , Sarah Connor has been getting texts with GPS coordinate of Terminators who fall through time . Miller explained those Terminators are more of the “ slow bullets ” Skynet send to down John Connor and Sarah took care of them all .
Director Tim Miller loves Terminator, and has an answer for everything.
“ In the movie , as it currently stands , Sarah observe killing two of them , ” Miller allege . “ Originally , that view had somewhat more talk of the town of putting to death and there were more . [ I wanted to make it ] expressed that Sarah killed these things . She ’d ascertain out where the time bubble were going to appear . She ’d be waiting and she ’d know ‘ em up . ”

Miller also pointed out that when Grace ’s time bubble appears on the bridge circuit near the beginning of the celluloid , Sarah ’s car can be seen in the background . She was there .
Here’s hoping we get to see Mackenzie Davis’ Grace back in another Terminator movie.
“ This was the first time that something new come through , ” Miller continued . “ I even want to imply that something else had had possibly come through . And she set about to believe that she was clew into the fact that , ‘ Okay , I changed the future , but it may not have worked the way I think because these new things are coming back in and they ’re wicked . ’ ”
Are there still Terminators out there or coming ?
Yes . We ’ll see if that plays into the future .
How exactly is Carl hearing about the other Terminators ?
In the film , Carl very quickly explain that he gets an qui vive when a Terminator is come from the hereafter , and then texts the coordinates to Sarah . So how did Sarah find Dani and Grace on the bridge ?
put together some of what Miller said above , we recall she got texts from Carl , saw at least Grace arrive ( as refer above , her machine is there ) and then , we recall , follow her , lastly intervening when the second Terminator disclose himself .
Was it essential for John Connor to die ?
Another shocking pick Dark Fate makes is killing John Connor . concord to Miller , former iterations of the narration flirted with him being a bigger part of it and there was even some talk that the newfangled Deliverer could be his girl — but , at last , they determine a clean slate was good .

Would Dani still become a loss leader if Legion did n’t beam a Terminator back ?
Think about it . If Legion did n’t send back the Rev-9 , Dani ’s family unit would still be alive , Grace would n’t have been sent from the future and neither of them would ’ve have met Sarah . As a upshot , Dani probably would n’t have risen to become this great military leader . In fact , sending the Rev-9 back almost ensures Dani ’s role as Legion ’s greatest enemy . Maybe the best thing Legion could have done would have been not to post any Terminators back at all .
“ Yes , unless , it ’s not the style you think it is , ” Miller said . “ [ For lesson ] what if Legion is winning in the future , and he knows the room he was create and the things that lead to his close - triumph in the future , all of this stuff , he had to lose along the way ? It ’s really which side of the Ouroboros do you desire to be on . ”

Yes , in a way , but Miller is n’t felicitous about it .
“ I always have a little second of a problem with Dani institutionalise Grace to pall , ” he say . “ We rig up this whole [ story ] where Grace is kind of Dani ’s surrogate fry and a female parent sending her child to give way for her is just … yeah , I had a different vista in mind . ”
So , did the movie always end the way it ends ?
Yes and no . Here ’s what Miller had to say .
“ The playground scene at the end was a passably late edition , ” he said . “ It was rummy because we had had so many dissimilar version of the ending . Most of them were fairly heavy . It was Sarah and Dani at Grace ’s tomb as they buried her . Or some sort of Viking funeral as they pushed her body down the river and she burn or whatever . And I say , ‘ I ’m all for the dense , striking ending . But free grace is still alive out there in the world . And why would n’t Dani go and see her ? ’ And everybody function , ‘ Oh , yeah , that ’s a good idea . ’ And then the conscious homage was the vacation spot . I thought what unspoiled fashion to say ‘ There ’s still a chance to fix this ’ then than that . It ’s just such a potent icon for Sarah that I thought it would have significance . ”
If that ’s a Rev-9 , are there other Revs ?
Yes . Though the movie does n’t explain it , the Terminators Grace is fight in the future are really Rev-7s , which indicate there have been various upgrades to the terminator . The 7s are faceless infantry and the 9s are infiltrators , hence the power to simulate anything it affect .
Why is n’t the Rev 9 just always split in two ?
It ’s not addressed in the movie but , in the film ’s pressing notes , it explains when the Rev-9 flex into two entities , neither is as substantial as when they ’re whole .
Did Dani believe what Sarah said about her ?
One of the odder moments in Dark Fate is when Sarah suggests that Dani is the mother of the succeeding savior , not the savior herself . It speaks to Sarah ’s antiquated way of life of mentation and , of course of instruction , we retrieve out afterwards it ’s not true . But , we asked Natalia Reyes what Dani is thinking in that mo .
“ Yeah [ she believes Sarah ] , ” Reyes told io9 . “ She does n’t even think it would be her . I think she ’s so unconnected and drop off in the middle of this journey … she does n’t sleep together who to trust . So she does n’t really believe or be intimate . And that ’s the matter . She says ‘ I do n’t like . I do n’t handle if I ’m the female parent of whoever . We have to do things now . ’ That ’s what make her the drawing card … So , at the terminal , when finally Grace tell her it ’s you , I think that ’s the shock . Like , ‘ Oh , god , I never recollect that was me , ’ but this whole journey is like state her , ‘ Yes , you are . ’ ”
How is it potential Carl ’s crime syndicate never realized he was a bionic woman ?
No one can actually resolve this . We ’ll just have it slither .
What ’s next for Grace , Dani , and Sarah ?
According to Miller , the Terminator writer ’ way limn three flick , but once production started with this film , they focused just on this one . So while he thinks he knows where it all goes , he admits that could change in the future .
“ I candidly was very conscious of , you want to give people enough information , but I do n’t desire to back any future film director into a quoin that they could n’t , you experience , write themselves out of if they wanted a different estimate , ” he said .
It seems like there ’s no fate but what the writers make . Terminator : Dark Fate is in theaters now .
