At first glance , indie director Gregg Araki ’s new picture feels like every “ Hero of Alexandria ’s quest ” fib ever — there ’s a unseasoned grinder who may be the “ chosen boy , ” plus monsters , mysteries and strange hints of the end of the world approaching . The untried deliverer facing the apocalypse is even played by Thomas Dekker , who was John Connor in Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles . But in the end , Kaboom turn out to be both giddy and darker than the usual “ hero search for himself ” movie .
Kaboom reminds me of the sort of rainbow - of - insanity movies that used to govern artistic creation - theatre cinemas , before indie picture show started being dominate by family angst and quirky route - trips . Araki owe a raft to John Waters , Roger Corman and Donnie Darko , but also to scores of other indie auteur of the sixties and 1970s , whose movies mixed satire , paranoia and porno .

In Kaboom , the main characters drop most of their downtime in a eldritch student cafe with a huge preindication on the paries that read , “ Welcome to the Ontological Void . ” I ’m not sure if the Ontological Void is the name of the coffeehouse , or if that ’s just a catchword , but either way it seems fitting . Our heroes are uncertain of what to believe in , and they have the shrewish suspicion that spirit is meaningless . There are only two things that can fill the ontological vacancy : sex ( the more the sound ) and find out response about the strange occurrence in their macrocosm .

Araki adapted one of my preferent novel of the 2000s , Mysterious Skin , and managed to twist it into one of my favorite movies of the 2000s . So it ’s no surprisal that Kaboom is stylish , warp and acute . And very , very queer .

So in Kaboom , Dekker plays Smith , a college freshman who ’s just about to plow 19 . Smith is a film - studies major ( in an other monologue , he describe his major as interchangeable to study a soon - to - be - out animal ) . And he ’s sexually omnivorous — when someone require him whether he ’s straight or gay , he just say he ’s “ undeclared . ” He has a huge crush on his surfer - beau roommate Thor ( who has a giving hammer ) , but meanwhile he hook up with a cunning young lady he meet at a company , and a guy whom he runs into on a nude beach . Meanwhile , his best Quaker Stella ( Haley Bennett ) commence date a super - live young woman who has supernatural powers … and it shortly turns uncanny .
( Just to let you know what you ’re in for , Dekker is nude in the first 30 seconds of this moving-picture show , although there ’s no real full head-on nakedness ever . )
Here ’s the first few moments of the moving picture :

with child chunks of Kaboom feel like the comical sex activity comedy you ’ve discover in ages — like the running subplot where Smith attempt to count on out if Thor is really full-strength , or heteroflexible . Thor is the ultimate hetero surfer dude , but he has a W.C. full of color - align flip - fizzle , and he exfoliate . And he like to wrestle other sheik almost naked . And — and this is one of the funny scene in the moving-picture show — he make a full - on earnest attempt to blow himself , a goal he reckon he can accomplish if he work at it every day .

And meanwhile , unexplained weird shit keeps happen to Dekker ’s quality , Smith . He has trippy dreams that seem to issue forth lawful — and one of the people in his dream , a woman he ’s never met , gets murdered by cult member tire out unusual animal mask . A headless body turns up in a dumpster , but is it that woman ’s , or someone else ’s ? And then there ’s the aforesaid woman with psychic superpower . Plus there are the eldritch messages and clew Smith keep finding that he ’s the “ prefer Son , ” and that “ it begins ” shortly . The animate being - direct cultists are bolt down up everywhere , and meanwhile , Smith ’s pot - smoke R.A. , the Messiah , is having apocalyptic visions .

You would think that the intermixture between apocalyptic confederacy / whodunit on the one hand and sex romp on the other would sense a bit awkward , but somehow they mesh into one trippy spectacle . The world of sinister forces trying to bestow the world to an end is just one more reason to company as hard as you’re able to before the world is gone . The search for gender , the search for answers , the hunt for sexual love … they ’re all part of the lookup for meaning . Which in number is part of come of age and judge to find yourself . If you ’re confused , it ’s because aliveness is confusing . ( And that , in turn , stand for you should credibly get pose . )
The thing that save Kaboom from being just a tiresome gender farce comedy or yet another camptastic David Lynch spoof is its amazing cuteness . The primary characters all speak in the same glib , ego - bemock way , frolic dialogue like “ nuttier than squirrel diddly ” or “ gayer than Clay Aitken ” or “ Does Mel Gibson hate Jews ? ” They have the fake impregnability of young people , but it all turns to exposure in a heartbeat . More than most films about unseasoned people , Kaboom captures some of the excitement and terror of being young and steamy and convinced that everything is fucked .
And without giving too much away , the movie actually does explain all of the weird happening by the end — it ’s even a scientific account , more or less . Although the very act of link thing up in a keen bow is in itself sort of a gonzo gesture , since many of the revelation require massive measure of reprieve of disbelief .

If you ’re up for a motion-picture show where you ’re going to be just as curious about the nature and grammatical gender of Thomas Dekker ’s next sexcapade as you are about the uncanny murderous confederacy surrounding him , then Kaboom is well worth jibe out .
Kaboom is having a very limited theatrical release in the U.S. , but is also uncommitted on - demand on most cable systems already .
