research worker in Georgia report that gorillas at zoo across the U.S. have come up up with a special vocalisation — something between a coughing and a sneeze — to get the care of zookeepers when they ’re hungry .
“ We were observing gorillas in the enclosures , and we were noticing a foreign vocalization that was happening at specific times , ” Roberta Salmi told Gizmodo in a headphone call . Salmi is a biologic anthropologist at the University of Georgia and lead author on thestudy , published in Plos One , characterizing this Modern vocal trick . “ I consider Western Gorilla gorilla civilizations in the wild , and the oeuvre that we were keep was not something that I had heard before . ”
Salmi and zookeeper Jodi Carrigan began to suspect that this unusual vocalization was an attempt by the Gorilla gorilla to get the attention of nearby humans , potentially to carry their desire for food . The researchers call this call a “ snough , ” a blend of “ sneeze ” and “ cough , ” and devised an experiment to search why and when these captive gorilla were snoughing . Salmi , Carrigan , and Salmi ’s then - student Monica Szczupider used a camcorder and a mike to examine the demeanor of eight gorillas at Zoo Atlanta under three conditions .

“ In one [ condition ] , we demonstrate the gorillas with just solid food . We represent the Gorilla gorilla in the 2nd condition with just the keeper . And then the third term was the keeper hold food in their hands , ” Salmi explain . Zookeepers in the first and third condition faced away from the cage , to ensure that the gorillas would have to get their attention . “ What we visit was that during the third stipulation , the Gorilla gorilla were producing this very unknown call . It ’s kind of a mixture between a coughing and a sneeze , done with a big capable mouth . That ’s quite rare in Gorilla gorilla system . ”
Half of the gorillas observed at Zoo Atlanta snoughed during the project ’s trials , and Salmi said that they would continue to snough in the direction of the zookeeper until they get a response . The team never keep Gorilla gorilla snoughing to each other , suggest the call is only used to get the care of humans .
That last find intriguedSimone Pika , a researcher who analyse fauna knowledge and communicating at the University of Osnabrück in Germany . Pika , who was not associate with the recent work , say in an e-mail that “ It is interesting why [ the Gorilla gorilla ] do not also use these strait when pass on with conspecifics , and it would be heavy to design an experiment where gorilla need to get together with another group member to achieve a finish ( for instance get food ) and test whether they would utilise the same sounds or may even invent additional I . ”
But why a snough in the first place ? The gorillas could be mimic speech sound related to health . “ The snough will trigger the attention and the time of the keeper , because it ’s their problem to check the wellness of their animals , so any kind of signboard of any disease , then the human being function to see what ’s going on , ” Salmi theorize .
In addition to their observation at Zoo Atlanta , Salmi and her colleagues solicited photos , videos , and testimonial from gorilla keepers at other menagerie using a view . They found that 18 out of the 39 responses noted the presence of the snough . “ The interesting part is that since some of those gorilla out of doors of Zoo Atlanta did n’t have any fundamental interaction with these Gorilla gorilla , it ’s possible that this snough call has been cook up multiple times and not only by the Zoo Atlanta Gorilla gorilla , ” noted Salmi .
Interestingly , three of the snoughing distaff Gorilla gorilla at Zoo Atlanta are come to — Sukari and Kudzoo and sisters , while Mary is Kudzoo ’s daughter — and this could be grounds that gorillas blame up the call from each other . “ This type of call may be acquire during ontogeny , ” Salmi say . “ So when the individual are small and they are learning when [ to produce ] specific claim , they may absorb this novel call and practice it . ” Salmi say that Mary has since been move to another institution , and other gorillas around Mary might now socially study the snough from her .
Other species might also have calls specifically for humans . big cat , for instance , seem to meowmostly to communicate with us . But cats are domesticated and have evolved over millennium to expect care from the great unwashed , something that ’s not rightful of gorilla , do this finding all the more intriguing .
