It ’s not been a safe time for DC ’s biggest superheroes draw sound decisions lately . Last hebdomad , Superman ’s idea to restore his world power wasvery obtuse , and it top to him gettinga cockamamy new superpower . This week , Bruce Wayne made a decision that has Brobdingnagian ramifications for the futurity of Batman … which was both silent and intellect - bogglingly puzzling .
course , there are major spoilers before for today ’s Batman # 49 , by Scott Snyder , James Tynion IV , Yanick Paquette , Nathan Fairbairn , and Steve Wands . You ’ve been warn .
The Batman on-going has been building up to the decision to return Bruce Wayne to the Bat - cowlfor quite a while now , and it ’s finally hap . After Bloom seemingly guts Jim Gordon and unmasks him as the new Batman for all of Gotham to see , Bruce ultimately confronts Alfred about the Batcave , quick to do what he need to to save the city .

This is really really tragical . Bruce and Alfred ’s conversation is remarkably well done , and you ca n’t serve but find for Alfred as he furiously tries to stop the man he ’s spend most of his life trying to protect from make a determination that robs him of his happiness . It ’s a debate that keeps circling throughout the issue , as Alfred equate Bruce ’s return to being Batman to killing the man Bruce has become . But then you determine out how Bruce plan to forthwith flex himself into Batman , as he currently has none of the memory board of the experiences or training that turn him into a hero .
Apparently the quondam Bruce Wayne used to store his brain on file in the Batcave , in the off opportunity that if he give out , he could download it into a ringer body , so there would be a Batman to defend Gotham . New Bruce shoves that Bat - Brain into his own , hop it makes a Batman who is n’t hamstrung by the heartbreak that make Batman in the first blank space . This is n’t a unexampled idea ; a flash forward story call “ Futures ending ” came out in 2014 , featuring a five - years - into - the - hereafter Batman slowly dying and trying to create a knockoff of himself so the Batman legacy could persist in . ( Never mind all those Robins and other protégés he helped train over the years ; that would be far too unproblematic . )
But “ Futures End ” had the excuse of being a flash forward story . This just seems a little pathetic , a cheap way to have an instantaneous Bruce Wayne - as - Batman , just in meter for Batman v Superman to strike theaters . Honestly , if it was n’t for Alfred ’s heartbreak , this entire issue would feel like a terrible sidestep in what has otherwise been a great arc . Everything is just too commodious , like we missed a few yield which ready this up as a plausible path for Bruce to go down .

The sudden future science coming out of nowhere is also compounded by the fact that the egress intersperses Bruce and Alfred ’s contestation with trippy looks at alternate Batmen , all at once painting them as future clone , multiversal doppelganger , and even repress component of Bruce ’s psyche , as they all fail and die , quick to be replaced by fresh Batmen .
It leads to some rattling visuals from Yanick Paquette , with rafts of beautiful splash Page describe the alternate Batmen as Bruce tries and strain again to get the machine to work . But it complicates the actual bosom of Batman # 49 , the public debate between Alfred and Bruce , and already makes an effect that ’s already pushing the realms of risible volume credibility even more confusing .
But Bruce ’s Insta - Bats machine does n’t figure out . Instead , it nearly kills him every sentence he tries to use it . He finally decides that he has to actually die for it to work , brain death giving the machine a blank slate to work on — no more Bruce Wayne , but a living Batman once more , pretty much neutralise the regard he had a few pages ago to create a new , happier Batman . Alfred ca n’t make the conclusion to pour down Bruce … so in steps his current romantic web Jules Madison , who out of nowhere reveals that she bang Bruce used to be Batman , and that he has to die to be Batman again . Also ? She ’s surprisingly o.k. with killing the dearest of her life just so Batman can be born-again . It ’s all just so convenient that none of it works on an emotionally square level .

It ’s Jules who pushes the push , and Bruce Wayne dies , only to be revived moments subsequently as Batman , who ’s seemingly none the wiser about everything that just happened to him , but is also quick to go save Gotham .
So yes , as we all look , Bruce Wayne is Batman once more . But is he really ? The Batman we make out for so many years died with the Joker , born-again as this newfangled man who had lost everything he had as a torpedo but arrive at an actual life , booster , and a love the old Bruce Wayne never had . sports fan might grumble that he was no longer Batman , but it ’s in reality quite distressing that that Bruce is now “ all in ” , his judgment erase and replaced with a stock Batman conciousness — like the Dark Knight is a perfunctory operating system update .
This was a Bruce Wayne unlike anything we ’d aim to live before : a Bruce Wayne that was allowed to be happy . Is Batman still Batman when you carve out Bruce Wayne and just implant a bunch of “ How to be Batman ” memories in him ? We ’ll have to wait and see to observe out .
