Boeing has announce it is developing a new unmanned space planing machine for the US military , plan to plunge satellites into celestial orbit by 2020 at a instant ’s placard .
Called the Phantom Express it ’s being evolve for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency ( DARPA ) as part of the Experimental Spaceplane ( XS-1 ) program . It ’s designate to travel at hypersonic speeds , which is above Mach 5 ( five time the speed of sound , or 6,200 km / h/3,800 mph )
“ Phantom Express is designed to break up and transform the artificial satellite launch appendage as we know it today , make a new , on - need space - launch capability that can be achieved more affordably and with less risk of exposure , ” say Darryl Davis , President of Boeing Phantom Works , in astatement .

This blank plane is design to set up vertically by itself , without needing extra admirer . It will have a small detachable rocket on top , which will carry a planet weighing up to 1,360 kg ( 3,000 pound ) .
Once the aeroplane reaches the edge of space , it will deploy its rocket and then return to Earth . The rocket salad will not be recovered , but the aeroplane will shoot down on a runway with a goal of being able-bodied to plunge again within minute . Each launching is gestate to be as fiddling as $ 5 million .
Of course , you might be familiar with another Boeing - build up infinite plane , the X-37B , which late turn back from amysterious missionin range . It ’s not yet clear if the Phantom Express is a replacement to the X-37B ( Boeing was rumored to be working on the X-37C ) , but we have asked Boeing for illumination and will update when we hear back .
Boeing will now build a technology demonstration fomite by 2019 , when it will fire the fomite ’s engine 10 time in 10 days . By 2020 , it is expect to do 12 to 15 trajectory tests , reach speeding of up to Mach 10 ( 10 times the speed of sound ) .
“ The XS-1 would be neither a traditional airplane nor a conventional launching fomite but rather a combination of the two , with the end of glower launch price by a divisor of ten and replacing today ’s frustratingly long wait clock time with launch on need , ” said Jess Sponable , DARPA program manager , in a separatestatement .
Several vehicles like this are already in mathematical process or evolution , including Orbital ATK’sPegasus launcherand Virgin Galactic’sCosmic Girl , both of which air - launch a rocket from a plane . The Phantom Express will be rather more various , though – and may just provide a speedy and cheap way to reach space .
