Well Io 9 is here and it ’s the most venial major — or peradventure the most major minor — raise to the Apple ’s mobile package in recent memory . But there are a few stigma larrup new apps to lecture about , and one of the openhanded unity is Apple News .
Before give-up the ghost to much further , let ’s state that whatever shortcomings Apple News has , it ’s an overall final amplification if you were using the app tragedy that was Newsstand . That being said , Apple News is n’t on the dot a news app messiah .
That “ Search ” tab design tho …

In many ways , News is the incarnation of what Apple does splendidly : reinvent what already exists but making it much well-situated . When you pop heart-to-heart News for the first time , you ’re greet with 177 dissimilar publications and topics to choose from . Everything from Eater to ProPublica to Cosmo is all there . Just one wiretap , and all that fine online news media will be added to your feed .
Once you ’re through the initial set - up stage , you may always skip over to the “ Search ” tab , type in whatever you want , and whammo — there it is . Although that ’s where you start seeing a great deal of pitfalls . For case , search “ Slate ” on Apple News and your pose with a nice , maroon - theme layout that has an update feed every twelve or so minutes . But type in other websites , and Apple News is n’t nearly as thoroughgoing nor does content take care about as honorable . Even spouse sites have some problems . For representative , Apple News does n’t seem to be a expectant fan of clickbait photograph galleries .
In the end , News is a pleasant viewing experience about half the prison term , and it ’s all mixed in together so it becomes kind of a mint .

iPhone 6 ( left ) and iPhone 5s
News also is n’t much of a design godsend . The layout itself is mercifully simple compare to the vomit of UI selection on Apple ’s Music app , for deterrent example , but the graze experience is pretty utilitarian on the iPhone 5s where it ’s just lines and lines and transmission line of text broken up meagrely by a 1 - inch hearty image . It ’s slightly better on the bigger screenland on the iPhone 6 , look more like Feedly and Google News ’ leaning layouts . But overall , it ’s far behind the choice and aim attention dedicated to mobile from apps like Flipboard or Feedly . But hey , of course there ’s going to be some room for betterment , right ?
And that ’s why I ’m not too concerned about look . During WWDC , Apple sagely demonstrate News with an iPad mainly because the app just see well bigger . Hopefully , some of those design choices and subtle animation will dribble down to smaller screens over time . It seems , at least at launching , Apple did n’t believe they could take all the neat whoremonger over to smartphones , and that ’s a ignominy .

As is custom , Apple also cribs a few easy UI shortcut from other readers out there . For example , you could long constrict on a story to either portion out or append to your “ Saved ” pile for tardy indication , similar to Feedly . you’re able to also reference past stories you ’ve peruse in the “ History ” pill for when you talk about “ that one story you understand ” at your next intellectual get together .
Feedly , News , and Flipboard
essentially , if you have any kind of nuanced media diet , have a craving for all of the news right when it happens , or just like pretty apps , I do n’t remember Apple News is a suitable substitute . But if you ’re more into sensitive - skimming — lightly nomming on the leafy green of news media — Apple News is a perfectly non - offensive and responsive app that make Newsstand see like the digital disaster that it was .

It ’s just a tough world when you have to go up against readers like Google News , considering the whole company was built for the expressed determination of delivering net info in the first place . But as far as native newsworthiness apps on iOS are concerned , I have to admit it ’s getting better .
