You know , for a show with umpteen alien race , brainsick metal tentacle God and psychotic albino , I still finger like I know where Defiance is going most of the time . But I did not have this problem in last night ’s installment .
allow ’s begin with the tedious announcement that Alak has managed to infuse Christie McCawley , of which the prime benefit is that Graham Greene ’s Rafe arrest another fun scene where he imperil to kill Alak if he does n’t knock off all the gangstering . Alak would be fine with that ; his painful record business is somehow succeeding , he ’s hiring whore as disc jockey , his mom ’s plow the gang stuff , but unfortunately , even from jail , Datak wo n’t let him give it up .
I mention this mostly because this tantrum introduces us to the McCawley ’s handmaiden Bertie , who is so mad that her mistress is pregnant that I almost exhort when Irisa beat her to death . See , the crazy small miss in Irisa ’ chief is still exceedingly into suffer Irisa gravel people to death ; even when Irisa handcuffs herself somewhere , the girl merely click her finger and Irisa wakes up over Bertie ’s torso plow in blood .

Irisa flees Defiance and receive Sukar , a.k.a . Klingon Space Jesus , and they have a affecting reunification until Crazy Head Girl forces Irisa to kill him as well — where we finally learn that Irisa is n’t beat these people up . rather , she ’s vomiting some of the filaments that sprouted from her in the season one finale into her victims ’ mouth . We do n’t know what the deal is , but we do know that Irisa is not happy with this situation , so she insert a rifle under her chin and pulls the trigger .
Yes , in one of Defiance ’s most harrowing scene , Irisa kill herself — and while she ’s utter , Irisa has a imagination of the past times : the Votan spaceship , plainly on its way to Earth , where someone who looks just like Irisia in some kind of uniform tellg a carbon monoxide - coconspirator they have to take over the ship to forestall the Votan colelctive from terraforming the Earth and wiping out mankind . Then Irisa occur to with a significant portion of her grimace miss . She begin to tardily , distressingly regenerate , while Crazy Head Girl mockingly sing her a Song dynasty . rebelliousness has never exactly been a light-colored - hearted romp , but this scene is extremely sullen , and incredibly effective because of it .
Crazy Head Girl also enjoin Irisa she is n’t killing these mass , but saving them — which vocalise preposterous until Bertie pops up , ostensibly altogether okay . Elsewhere , Sukar wakes up as well . A cut to LA shows the Mohawk Irathient lady Irisa had supposedly pulsate to death in the premiere doing just fine , other than chasing down a Thomas Kid to barf some of filiaments into his mouth . And thus it spreads … whatever “ it ” is .

And suddenly , the mystery of what the infernal region is bump to Irisa has gotten a lot more interesting . What is inside her ? What is it doing ? What the snake pit is the mickle with the flashback ? And there ’s another possible complication because Pottinger has used Doc ’s severed fingerbreadth to get into her good , where she has … something , which may have to do with the experiments she was doing on Irisa in the time of year one last . Pottinger frees her to proceed her work on the E - Rep ’s behalf , and I ’ll be shocked if this “ work ” does n’t directly necessitate Irisa and the craziness inside her .
And speaking of Doc : Pottinger has countenance her an assistant , and Doc has chosen Datak , so he too gets his release . It ’s an objectively terrible decision , because Doc has break up him to protect her , but 1 ) he ’s a uncontrollable psychopath , which he proves in this very episode when he tries to circumvent up his son through his prison bulwark when he finally figures out Stahma has not been trying to disembarrass him , and 2 ) the chances of him position his job for Doc in advance of his criminal enterprises is fundamentally nil .
But it gives us “ The Cord and the Ax ’s ” other dandy scene , when Datak , cruddy from the six - naut mi walk from Camp Reverie back to Defiance , enters his nursing home and joins his menage in the bathtub . As he enters the pristine bath , the soil and clay radiate off him polluting the weewee his wife and son parcel . It ’s not at all insidious , but it ’s really , really well done , and Tony Curran has exactly the veracious look of smug , vicious rage on his face . And then he riffle the fuck out because he ’s still a psychopath , and beats up Alak and half - drowns Stahma . But even this is almost worth it , because the episode ends with Stahma hang onto the edge of the bathroom , puff for atmosphere , but with a smoldering rage in her eye — a rage she immediately sink , and will manifestly release at the right consequence . It ’s a lesson Datak could stand to learn .

Assorted Musings :
• Seriously , Defiance , I could not give less of a shit about Alak ’s phonograph record label . It just makes me mad whenever you mention it .
• While hunt down for Irisa , Nolan snoops through Irisa ’s diary . We ’ll see if that has any effect .

• Tommy really flaming hates Nolan mightily now . I would love an episode devoted to Tommy and Berlin doing nothing but shout Nolan on all his horseshit .
• I am really sad that Datak has turned into a simple behemoth ; I escape the cunning he displayed in season one . wise wickedness is always more fascinating than dumb evil . But still , the shot where he returns home was jolly great .
• Amanda is now doing Space Heroin with Pottinger , but still take sex with Nolan . Which is a adorable tie - in to the line of merchandise of the Nox , via Nolan to Pottinger : “ I did n’t go to high school , but I imagine this is what it was like . ”
