Aftera pilot that show more possible than hope , Almost Human return for the second part of it ’s two - Nox premiere with amuch stronger instalment . It was scarce arrant , but it was a definite improvementover the premiere . Also : Sexbots !

The episode lead off with a man hiring a ludicrouslygood - looking sexbot ( and well done to whoever did the cast for that ) . But theman is n’t concerned in sex — he ’s fussy scanning her for a mixed bag of things . The Albanian goon launch the brothel notice what he ’s doing , spray stuff ontheir faces rendering their head whole white on security cameras ( so they ca n’t be identify ) , burstinto the room , kill the guy , lead the sexbot out , and flatten off a “ deoxyribonucleic acid bomb ” — a turkey that pollute every single bit of evidence they could have possiblyleft behind . And thus we check one of Almost Human ’s new forcefulness — imaginingthe freakish engineering criminals could have in the future .
Minka Kelly does her mostly off - camera investigation , andarrives to tell Kennex and Dorian the odd fact that the sexbot left trace ofhuman DNA in the elevator — something that is very illegal ( sexbots , by the wayaren’t — the show piss a special stage of saying sex crimes are way down oncethey were introduced to the market place ) and furthermore , it ’s the DNA of a womanwho was abducted several months ago . Across town , a young woman is abducted for much the same reason .

It ’s not the worst plot in the cosmos , untilyou think back it ’s 2046 and why the hell can’twe create real skin to use for these sexbots ? Why do they need the women ’s fullbodies and not just a small sample distribution of DNA ? Why do they keep stealing dissimilar cleaning lady foreach sexbot rather of using just one ? And most of all , why and how are thetaking their women ’s tegument by impound vacuum tube to their neck ?
appear , I think we should all take on right now that AlmostHuman is never , ever going to be unadulterated with the scifi and its tech . We ’ll getsome good ideas like taproom computer code license plates , sexbots , the DNA bomb , the “ flashmasks ” , and the tiny giraffe toy robot , and for tale purposes we ’ll haveexceedingly dumb , improbable shit like harvesting skin via neck opening tubes . It seemslike Almost Human is uncoerced to be even less realistic than Fringe in thisregard , but I conceive we should all just appreciate it when it comes up with full idealike all the technical school remark above .
And besides , as I mentioned in the recap of the premiere , the scifi stuff is really just the delightful cherry on top of the ice-cream sundae thatis the Kennex - Dorian relationship and the limited effects . The special effectswere again top - notch — if they can really maintain this , I ’ll be bewilderedbut also impressed — but Karl Urban and Michael Ealy have settled down into a wonderfulcamaraderie that it seems impossible that this is only the second instalment .
Seriously , here ’s the highlighting reel : Dorian making fun ofJohn for pock the underworld out of some tyke by stabbing his man-made peg with aknife ; Dorian reach John an online dating visibility ; Dorian make fun of Johnbecause of his disavowed puppy love on Minka Kelly ; Dorian making John intenselyuncomfortable by telling him he ’s scan his balls and John is “ backed up . ”Honestly , I could watch an integral installment of Dorian doing his John impression , and it ’s a will not only to Ealy ’s skills at making Dorian personable buthow quickly he and Urban have gelled together that these scenes wreak so exceedinglywell . Honestly , even if the installment ’s plot were great it would pale incomparison to John and Dorian ’s banter .
Anyways , the plot need to be resolve , and John and Dorian find another sexbot with tangible skin , practice some kind of silicon chip bug which emits a GPS signal ( the blaze ? ) to chase down where she was created , and utilize that to obtain the Albanians ’ skin farm and deliver some ( not all ) of the snatch women . In the end , Dorian watches as the police force “ decommission ” the sexbot with the human hide , and John give the sack up and finally chatter his ex - cooperator ’s married woman and kid .
All in all , I think Fox made the right decision in airingboth sequence so close together , because this second episode represented a muchstronger show , one that has both likely andpromise . It ’s too early to severalise whether Almost Human will proceed to improveor just coast on the charm of John and Dorian ’s partnership , but at themoment , I think it ’s safe to say that Almost Human is almost pretty darnedgood * .

It ’s interesting that Dorian is not only willing toillegally hack the sexbot fellowship ’s data processor electronic connection without a warrant perJohn;s request , but that he ’s able to . They made a robot copper that doesn’tstrictly need to obey the law ? Or who can disobey the law under orders from aliving police force officer ? Hmm …
So I paid special attention to how Michael Ealy wasplaying Dorian , because last night I think he did a wonderful job play awarm , empathetic fibre while still seeming somewhat like a robot , and I couldn’tfigure out how . Well , I think I got it : he keep his facial formula almostentirely flat — occasionally he has the slightest of smirk or frown — but heconveys almost every other emotion with his eyes , and he does it really , reallywell . Do you Guy agree , or am I missing something ?
So Kennex ’s friend who die in the 2046 ambush was hispartner … but there were still MX android running around , and has n’t the showexpressly said all human police officers must have a robot partner ? Did Johnrefuse to have a robot partner ? Was this before the mandate ? Was John perhaps arobot and did n’t know it ? Or am I think too much about it and this is asilly detail tot in to give Kennex more pathos and will never amount toanything important ? Hmm .
By the way , apparently there ’s actually a “ Kennex is arobot ” hypothesis blow around , but I do n’t buy it . 1 ) It ’s an highly obvious gadget , and 2 ) I ca n’t see them contravene the total premiss of the show — a human copand a automaton cop are partners — for the sake of it Other characters on the QT and/or unknowingly being robots?Sure .
All that stuff and nonsense about expiry and “ going to a well place”was super clichéd and obvious , but goddammit if Michael Ealy did n’t still kindof make it exploit in the picture where the sexbot was decommissioned .
