It ’s gentle to get play up about the ughs of air travel , particularly on a week like this . But there are good deal of way to make fly less terrible — and some of the best minds in design are currently working on them . We posed a simple question to a few of them : If you could do anything to improve the flying experience , what would it be ?
This week , we ’ll be deal their answers with you . Yesterday we get a line from textile designerElizabeth Whelan , and today we bestow you insights from Matt Rolandson , a pardner atAmmunition , a San Francisco - based Cartesian product , fundamental interaction , and brand plan business firm . Stop traveling for business
“ Probably the single most effective affair that people can do to get a better experience with travel is to design their lives so that they do n’t have to do it very much . I have a feeling that half of all business traveling could credibly be conducted in another way that does n’t require expend monolithic amounts of financial , environmental , and excited resources to get around the world . Of naturally , that ’s not always tenable ( and vacation travel is different ) . So … ”
Be empathetic to the common traveler
“ I imagine there are lots of things that airlines could do to empathize more with the brain of the traveler . A great example : The majority of the passengers who enter an plane are run to be in coach . You get on the plane , you ’re steeling your resolution to take a seat , and the very first thing after you step off the precipice into this succinct post is walk through first course . C’mon — could we orchestrate this in a fiddling more pernicious path ? Emotionally , it set up a pretty bad tone at the beginning of the experience . It does n’t really say , ‘ Hey , you ’ve made a great decision to take this trip . ’ The first subject matter is : ‘ It ’s not going to be as good as it could be . ’ It ’s terrible . ”

Focus on the ground when you’re in the air
“ I call back vanish over Iraq at the meridian of the war ; the maitre d’hotel came on and note it and all of a sudden it totally rewired my thoughts . Basically , it ’s very abstract up there in a plane : it ’s humming , it ’s meretricious , the air is weird . That little mathematical function they show is a dim , shadowy reflexion of what ’s go on , and what ’s going on is outstanding . You ’re in a thermionic vacuum tube journey above the earth ! It ’s miraculous that you ’re up there ! ”

“ It would be incredible if airlines enabled people to truly take stock of what ’s actually happen as they pass over landmarks or issue or cultures . make a palpable connexion would give passengers could have a tangible - time view of what ’s go on below . ”

Maybe the answer isn’t actually more legroom or a faster security line…
“ Clearly there ’s a gravid deal of inefficiency and lack of empathy with regards to the whole travel experience : from ticketing to client maintenance to security to making your way around , it is a very complex , regulated , competitive , toll - pressurise industry . It ’s savage . You feel like you ’re giving up a band of power . We conceive it ’s worth exploring what travelers can do as individuals work within this crappy system — to take ascendancy of what they ’re experience on their own full term , even if it ’s just a mind-set or speculation . That ’s perish to have a faster , more tangible doable effect than a better arse - back tray . ”
… So don’t forget to relax
“ We should all be more engaged with the good part of the traveling experience ; to focus on why it ’s meaningful , and why we ’re doing it , to concentrate on the fact that there is a point , and the point is to experience the world , to exhort yourself up against it and in an continuous direction to find the ken and sound . It ’s not a rational , operational thing — it ’s a special , awe-inspiring , emotional thing . Just study control of our your emotions and intense feelings will steady you down to give a sense of well - being . ”
