With the 15th day of remembrance of the film approach , and it now streaming on Netflix , I figured it was prison term for a rewatch . I told my married woman , Jayne , “ We have to rewatch Zathura soon . ” She tell , “ What ’s that ? ” I replied,“Oh , it ’s this awe-inspiring small movie that ’s kind of Jumanji in space . Jon Favreau guide it . ” Then a day would go by , I ’d remind her about Zathura again , and she ’d already forget us babble out about it . This went on and on until we eventually beseech play .

“ expect , this movie has Josh Hutcherson , Kristen Stewart , Dax Shepard , and Tim Robbins in it ? How have I never find out of it ? ”

It was a fairish dubiousness , specially from a woman who lives with me and work in a video shop growing up . Zathura : A Space Adventure was release in November of 2005 and , on a budget of about $ 65 million , grossed about$65 million worldwide . Not great . A few hoi polloi meet it , butit was n’t a hit . It did n’t help being let go of within workweek of the fourth Harry Potter moving-picture show , the first Chronicles of Narnia picture , The Legend of Zorro , Chicken Little , andthe remaking of King Kong . It got buried .

The movie itself , however , was well - received , frisk a reinvigorated 76 % ratingon Rotten Tomatoes . But there are also stretches in the middle of the movie that are mighty monotonic . Because their sis Lisa ( Kristen Stewart ) literally gets frozen for most of the flick , the bulk of the story is Walter and Danny just deal turns in the game with somewhat dissimilar obstruction . put off this , fix that , etc . Eventually , Lisa derive back and , most importantly , anew cosmonaut character is introduced ( Dax Shepard ) , but , until then , it ’s repetitive .

The crux of the pic is such a simple one , too . It ’s about two crony growing up : Walter find out to respect his untested brother , and Danny facing his fears . There ’s not much more to it . Compare that to the original Jumanji where , in addition to a slight sibling rivalry , there was also this venturer who ’d spent his entire life stick in the game . It added a whole other dimension of drama and emotion . Plus , there was the added advantage of him being recreate by Robin Williams ( sorry , Dax ) .

Now , spoiler warning signal , Zathura resound that subplot with the spaceman character , in a rather profound and touching way too , but it ’s kept as a surprisal . So while the reveal is fantabulous and takes the movie to another floor ( even if it does n’t make much sense ) , everything is backloaded rather than spread out . As a result , the movie works but feels scratchy .

Which , I think , is believably the giving problem . Jayne , and the creation , probably do n’t remember Zathura because Zathura was culturally overshadow and is just an average motion-picture show . It ’s good , the experience of watching it is pleasurable , but outside of Hutcherson requesting succus boxes , very little about it stands out . It ’s just , as advertise , Jumanji in space , but not as good .

That said , there are means , way worse things you’re able to watch out out there . The effect throughout the film , both hardheaded and digital , are very telling . The filming is rather beautiful . The musical score is rousing . Watching it now — be intimate Stewart from Twilight , Shepard from Parenthood or his podcast , Hutcherson from Hunger Games , and that Favreau would take Iron Man decent after — certainly adds a lot . The film captures a moment in time before so many things alter . For object lesson , it ’s impossible to see the automaton in this flick now and not see theMark I Iron Man armour .

The film was mostly forgotten , but it ’s not without its virtue . If you look on it again , odds are it ’ll be much more memorable , flaws and all . Zathura : A Space Adventure , which celebrate its fifteenth anniversary in November , is currently pour on Netflix .
